How often should I work with a trainer?
Answer
VYGOR usually suggests the following:
- 3x per week…
If you are beginning a exercise program for the first time or the first time in a while.
If you have very specific goals or want quick results.
If you feel uncomfortable performing the exercises on your own.
If you like being challenged by fitness professional and getting the most of your workouts.
If you lack self motivation. - 2x per week…
If you have some experience with a structured fitness program.
If you have very specific goals or want quick results.
If you feel comfortable performing exercises on your own.
If you have more motivation when you have a push from someone else. - 1x per week…
If you have experience with a structured fitness program.
If you just want to maintain your fitness.
If you just want someone to keep you on track and provide feedback on program.
If you are completely self-motivated and goal oriented.
VYGOR recommends that individuals just starting to work with a fitness professional work with them on a weekly basis for a minimum of 8 weeks. This is enough time for a fitness professional to actually have an impact on your fitness, your knowledge, your motivation and your success. Unless you are a very experienced and self-motivated person, working with a fitness professional less than this will most likely not yield the results you are looking for.
How do I choose the right trainer?
Answer
Set up an initial consultation with a Fitness Professional. During this initial consultation your main objective is to determine if this person has the knowledge, the experience, the communication style and personality to insure your success. Base your decision on these areas:
- Knowledge – Does the Fitness Professional have a strong educational background? i.e. bachelors degree in exercise science, physiology, athletic training, nutrition, physical therapy. Certification by NASM, ACSM or NSCA Experience – Does the Fitness Professional have experience working with people who have similar goals as yourself? Can he/she provide results and testimonials?
- Communication – Do you feel comfortable talking to the trainer? Does he/she listen and understand? Can he/she communicate effectively to you?
- Personality – Do you like his/her personality? Does he/she have positive, enthusiastic energy? Could you spend an hour 1x, 2x or 3x per week with him/her?
